5 ways to promote wellbeing in the workplace

Wellbeing at work is so important.

In 2014, the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Study (APMS) showed that every week, 1 in 6 adults experiences symptoms of common mental health problems.

Mental health problems can lead to loss in productivity and efficiency.

But, more importantly your employee could be lacking a sense of belonging, purpose and meaning.

As a society, we need to promote a better work life balance.

Our jobs need to meet more than just our financial needs. Our jobs need to give us purpose and meaning.

And, what’s more, is there is a lot that you can do to help your employees.

Here are our top 5 ways to promote wellbeing at work:

    1. Flexible Working You may be thinking this means that everyone will want to come in late on Mondays and leave early on Fridays. But, it doesn’t need to be that way. Decide on the core hours that the office/phones need to be covered. Then start a discussion with your employees about flexible working arrangements. Invite staff to talk about when they are most efficient and devise a mutually agreeable and beneficial rota. That way it is fair to the business, but also fair to each employee.
    2. Remote Working
Does all your work need to be done in the office? Perhaps you could think about staff working from home. Sometimes working in your PJs is nice. No need to dress up for the office and you can pop a wash on in your lunch break.
    3. Give regular feedback and encourage peers to do the same
Customers tend to openly give bad feedback more than positive. Do not let this be the same for your employees. Try to provide feedback regularly and ensure you highlight the positive. Encourage your staff to do this to one another too. We all feel good when someone else thanks us, or gives us positive feedback.
    4. Pay attention to the little things
Mark birthdays, milestones in employees lives and occasions such as Easter and Christmas. A card from the boss on a birthday, and egg on the desk at Easter or a Poinsettia at Christmas – these little things all add up. It makes staff feel appreciated and cared about.
    5. Think outside the box
Be different, be bold. Put your branding out there and make sure staff know what the mission and vision is, and more importantly, what their role is in that. Put it up on the walls so they see it every day and know their purpose and meaning at work. Go one step further and ask them what quotes inspire them – what quotes inspire you? Get them up on the walls too - inspire every day.

It doesn’t have to cost the earth, but your staff’s wellbeing at work will be greatly improved. Remember to be consistent to be authentic.
